Does this term “Backlinks” is something that you quite often hear in the SEO or blogging industry?

Are you scratching your head every now and then when you hear this term?

Are you not aware of this term “Backlinks”?

Then here I am with a complete guide on Backlinks. It’s quite a long time since I write something related to blogging as I was busy with some other projects. But in these four months, I came across many newbie bloggers who are very curious to start blogging, but they don’t know anything about it.

Most of them know the basic things like domain name, hosting and WordPress but they don’t know what backlinks are. So I thought that I might help them out with a complete guide on this topic and let them aware of every small thing about it.

So just sit back relaxed and enjoy this complete guide “Backlinks: 7 things you should know about Backlinks in SEO to grab authority and get ranked.”

What are backlinks?

If you are a newbie blogger or a person who is going to start blogging soon, you always hear a term backlinks in the blogosphere.

You hear or read someone mentioning how he/she got some great results from this backlink thing.

Actually, when a website gets a link from any other site, then it is called a backlink.

For example, there are two sites namely “A” and “B.” Now the author of “A” wrote an article with heading “XYZ” and published it on the site. Now some how the author of “B” gets a link to his website from this “XYZ” article on site “A” that is called a backlink for site “B.”

In the simple words, a backlink is just an incoming link from some external site to your site.

In the past, backlinks are the major ranking factor, and in the past, a site with some good number of backlinks was always on the front page of the search engines. But with time everything changes and so does the value of backlinks. It’s not like they are totally out of ranking factor, but they are not the primary factor for ranking anymore. But yes, not directly but indirectly they are still there to get your website listed.

Many ranking factors still depend on backlinks, but unlike the past now numbers of backlinks don’t matter, the thing that matters is their quality.

Always remember, if “Content is the King” then “Backlink is the Queen.”

Different terms used in backlinks

So till now, you are cleared with “what are backlinks”, but still there are some terms that you are not aware of and you have read or heard them many a time. Some main terms used with backlinks are as follow:

Link Juice-

There are many different definitions of this word while all are pointed towards the same conclusion. Here are some of the definitions that you will find about link juice:

Link juice or Google Juice is a colloquial SEO term describing the distribution of backlinks within a web page and the strength or reputation of these links – En.Ryte.Com

The famous blog Crazy Egg defines it like:

Link juice is a non-technical SEO term used to reference the SEO value of a hyperlink to a particular website or web page – CrazyEgg.Com

Another giant of SEO industry appraises it as:

Link juice is a colloquial term in the SEO world that refers to the power or equity passed to a site via links from external or internal sources – WooRank.Com

So in simple terms when you get a backlink from any site then it passes the some of the authority to your blog, and that’s what we call Link Juice. It helps in getting domain authority (DA) and which ultimately helps in better search rankings.

Internal Link-

The internal linking is another term that you have come across many times. You have heard or read it that do proper internal linking of your blog it will help you and all.

It is just a simple technique to interlink your articles with one another. Now suppose you have written an article on SEO and then some other day you write an article about Digital Marketing. Then SEO is a factor of Digital Marketing, and you will definitely include the term SEO in your Digital Marketing article.

So you can link that term SEO to your old article about Search Engine Optimizations (SEO).

Simply, linking one web page with another on a single site is called internal linking

External Link-

Just the opposite of internal link is the external link. The external link from your site to any other site can act as a backlink for his/her site from your site. So whenever you are trying to link back to any other site by mentioning it as a source site then think twice whether you want to pass your link juice to it or not.

Link Building

The link building is another common term when it comes to backlinks, and I am damn sure that you had come across this terms hell lot of times whether you are a newbie or an interstitial level blogger.

Generally, in the simple words, Link Building is a process of creating backlinks for your site. So the strategy you follows to create a backlink from any site to your domain is called a link building technique.

Anchor Text

Anchor Text is another term that you came across many times when anybody talks about backlinks. Have you ever seen a link in an article with blue colour or even sometimes underlined? Or have you ever came across a site where in the comment section when you hover over the name of the person it shows a link?

If yes, then that link is called an anchor text.

In other words, anchor text is a text with a hyperlink to it, when you click that link it will take you to some destination to which it is pointed. That text to which hyperlink is provided is called the anchor text.

It is also quite common that whenever you make a backlink use the proper anchor text instead of using the whole link as, it is a bad practice in SEO.

Referring/Root Domains

Referring domain or ref domain or root domain all are one thing. You have heard it many times.

Whenever you create a backlink from one domain multiple times, you can see your backlink numbers increases. For example, if you create four different backlinks from “Site 1” and three from “Site 2” the total count of backlinks will be seven. But the root domain or the actual numbers of the domain that refers to your domain is two. Because you have created backlinks from only two different domains.

So what referring domain means in SEO is how many backlinks does your site have from a unique domain.

Do-follow is a prevalent term in the blogosphere. You have heard or read it many times on your journey to blogging industry. They are a great source to increase your site’s authority and gain some high rankings which ultimately lead to outstanding traffic to your site.

Whenever you put a link in your article or anywhere on your site, by default that link is a do-follow link. Now what a do-follow link does is that it passes the link juice to the domain you are pointing with that hyperlink in your article. So it depends on you as mentioned before that whether or not you want to pass link juice from your site to any other domain or not.

It is the replica of do-follow. A no-follow domain doesn’t allow any sort of link juice to pass to the referring domain. So in case, you don’t want to pass any link juice to the referring domain you are using in your article just provide it with a no-follow tag.

By default all the comment backlinks are no-follow.

DA is the acronym for Domain Authority. You can give the credit to Moz.Com for this metric. Yes, it is a metric to check the authority of a domain. It is one of many ranking factors and is also another important term associated with backlinks.

Almost all of the industry’s expert says that always check the DA of the site on which who are going to create a backlink. This is a metric initiated by Moz.Com, and it takes the number of quality backlinks as the primary criteria with age and popularity to follow.

Here you are awarded a Moz DA Score for your site which starts from zero in the beginning and grows with the age of domain and number of backlinks. Moz.Com gives you the score out of 100.

So here is an example, there is a school with name Blogosphere where many students (blogs/sites) get enrolled each day. Every month a teacher called Moz gives the score (DA) to the students (sites/blogs) for their performance throughout the month out of 100.

Hope this helps you understand better. DA get updated once every month.

Just like DA, PA is another search engine ranking metrics developed by Moz.Com, and it stands for Page Authority. It takes backlinks, Moz Rank, Moz Trust, Spam score and many other factors into consideration to give a rating out of 100 to a particular page that how much chances are there for that page to rank in the search results.

Likewise DA this Page Authority also updates once a month. And with the increase in DA, there is a 100% chance that PA will also increase.

Spam Score

Spam Score is yet another Moz.Com metric to judge the authority of a site. It considers MozRank, Backlinks, Content, and other factors to give the score out of seventeen (17). It is a metric initiated and developed by Moz to measure the penalization risk of a domain from Google updates.

It is also get updated once a month.

CF is short for Citation Flow, and it is a metric by MajesticSEO.Com

It is a way to find out how important a domain is and to judge this it pays attention to the number of backlinks your domain have. But it does not take into account the quality of those backlinks, and the best example of this are the porn or betting sites.

So it is a metrics based on the number and not the quality of backlinks that your site have.

TF is the short form for Trust Flow, and it is another MajecticSEO.Com metrics to judge the authority of a site. But unlike CF, this metric considers the popularity of a site by its quality. So the more authenticate your backlinks are, the more is the Trust Flow (TF) score of your domain.

Both TF and CF are measured on a rating scale of 100. If TF increases the CF will definitely increase, but same is not the case with CF i.e. if CF increases no one can say plainly that the TF will also increase.

Page Rank is what PR stands for, and it was (or is) a metric by Google. Some professional in the SEO industry claims that Page Rank is dead, but I saw many sites which still shows the PR. So there are still doubts about it being dead or alive, but it is a metrics that is initiated by Google.

Google provides a score out of 10 for a domain which tells how popular a web page is in the eyes of Google.

These are some most commonly used terms with backlinks in SEO and in case I forgot some then mention them in the comment section so that I can add them up here.

Types of Backlinks

Now after the standard terms we are on yet another major topic that is types of backlinks. There are many types of backlinks, but I will make you aware of the primary which is in trend these days or some which are tough to call dead or alive.

Comment Links

These are the links that your site get as a backlink from other domain when you comment and put in your site’s or article’s URL in the comment box or website box mentioned in the comment form.

It is one of the oldest strategies to generate backlink for your site.

To create a comment backlink, you need to visit a site which has the comment box with the “website” field in it. Then all you need to do is to fill in your name, email address, website URL and type a comment that is related to the topic discussed on that web page.

If possible, ask some genuine question relevant to the subject in that way the chances of comment getting approved increases. Don’t write down the formal comments like “very well written,” “thanks” and all other as they will hardly get the approval from the author.

And if your comment is not approved then there is no benefit of commenting. So try to write a genuine comment asking a query or anything that get approved. By default all the comment backlinks are no-follow, but they are handy to create in the early days of your blogging career.

Guest Post Links

This is another major way to get backlinks for your site. Guest Post links are still in a phase where some will say it’s dead and some will say it still works very well. What I experienced is that if this strategy is approached in a right way, it’s always a boon for your search engine rankings.

It is the most common practice these days in the SEO industry to grab some authority links for your new site or main site.

What you need to do is, find out the sites that accept the guest post and then contact them and tell them that you are interested in writing a unique and quality guest post for their site. And in return to that, you need a do-follow backlink from their site with the anchor text placed genuinely in the guest article that you write for them.

Once you get the positive reply, then write a quality article for them and put an anchor text link in the article genuinely that points to your domain and get it published on their site.

Forum Links

It is another link building strategy that is very much in trend these days like the guest post. What you need to do is to join some authority forums and ask your query there or help some fellow members. And then you can drop your anchor text link there on the forum if the forum rule allows that.

Directory Submission

It is a strategy that seems to be quite on the verge of ending soon. It is almost dead but still, some of the bloggers say that it is still beneficial for them to get ranked. All you need to do is to find some high authority directories from the web and then submit your site’s URL there, and that’s it.

Once the submission is approved, you will get the backlink from that directory.

So these are some of the important types of backlinks and link building strategies that you should follow to create backlinks for your site. But guest post and forum link building strategies are on a high in the recent times.

Benefits of Backlinks

Before moving to the benefits of building backlinks, let me clear one thing that SEO is an industry that changes every now and then. Some strategies might work today but not in future due to a new Google update. So no one in the industry can assure you that every approach will work in future too. But yes, it is damn true that if you follow every strategy genuinely and approach it in a right way without any wrong methods in between, you will always see yourself in a win-win situation.

But yes, it is damn true that if you follow every strategy genuinely and approach it in a right way without any wrong methods in between, you will always see yourself in a win-win situation.

Now let’s move to the advantages of backlinks in SEO.

Referral Traffic

Whenever you comment on a site with your link there or a link to your site is placed on some other domain then there are high chances of you getting the referral traffic (visitors) to your site from there. So backlinks help you to get the referral traffic which will be perfect for your site.

Jump in Metrics

As mentioned earlier, with the quality backlinks in your kitty you not only increase the referral traffic but also the growth in the ranking metrics like DA, PA, TF, CF, etc. And this increase in the metrics will definitely be going to work for you, and the reason is coming in the next point 🙂

Branding & Authority

With the quality backlinks, the parameter of your site goes high and what that brings it the authority to your blog. The quality of backlinks not only bring the authority but it also gives branding to your site. Now how can the authority and branding of your blog helps you, the branding and authority will provide you with some sponsored post from some big brands in your niche.

So this brings the opportunity to earn more by just writing a sponsored post on your blog.

Relationship Opportunity

When your blog is new, you have to find out the authority blogs to publish a guest post but when your blog gets the authority people will contact you to post their guest post on your blog. This will help you some extra money too in case you want a paid guest post to be published on your site.

So with the guest post and sponsored post opportunity on your blog, you are open to generate some good relationship with some big brands and fellow bloggers.

Good Backlink and Bad Backlinks

Whenever you start to follow a link building strategy, always remember that every backlink is not a good backlink. If you create backlink without any research then sooner or later your site will fall down. So it’s always important to look out for some important factors before creating backlinks for your site.

Good backlinks are boon to your site while bad backlinks can give your site a downfall which will take many months to be back on track. Always try to check the site from where you are going to create backlink whether it is a site with the genuine and quality backlink, is there anything that looks spammy and if you find anything negative don’t go for that site to create a link.

If you create bad backlinks for your site, in the beginning, you will get some good results but as soon as Google gets to know about the spammy or bad backlinks your site will be nowhere in Google search rankings.

Things to remember  & Things to avoid

The good and bad backlinks bring us to the major topic that is the thing to remember and things to avoid while creating a backlink for your site. As I told you earlier that not all links coming to your site are good, some of them might harm your rankings too. So always keep an eye on things that will help you to get positive results and things that might have the negative impact on the ranking of your blog.

Both the positive and negative backlinks will take the time to give you the results. First, both of them will rank your site in the search engine rankings but as the time passes and Google come to know about the quality of the backlinks, the site with the positive backlinks will be there on the search engine while the one with bad backlinks will be gone from there.

What to remember

Before building backlinks from any site don’t forget to check the following things and if they all (or majority) are positive then you can create the backlink from that site.

  • Always check the DA of the site, it should be at least 20+ when your site is new once you have a DA of 20+ then take that to 30+ minimum.
  • Do check the TF of the site if the quality of the site is good only then give it a go.
  • Always check the content whether it is genuine and quality content or not.
  • Do check whether the site is penalised by Google or not.
  • Also, check how frequent they are with the article update i.e. do they publish new articles regularly or not.
  • Before going to create a backlink always check whether the site is getting a good amount of traffic or not.

What to avoid

There are very few thing that you need to avoid, but yes you do need to avoid them totally.

  • Quantity does not matter so don’t create huge numbers of backlinks in a day and then sit back.
  • Don’t create links on a site which is spammy or not with the original content.
  • Don’t create links on unrelated sites e.g. if you have a tech related niche blog then there is no point in creating links from a movies niche blog. Relevancy is necessary in the longer run.
  • Don’t put the links on the site which contain links or content that is banned by Google like porn, hacks and all.
  • Never buy backlink services from anyone until you check their past history.

Event Site backlinks vs. Main Site Backlinks

Event blogging is very much in trend these days as it gives the huge amount of earning in quite a small time. When it comes to tactics or strategy to build backlinks event blogging is entirely different from regular main site blogging.

In event site link building you follow all the link building techniques whether it is white hat, grey hat or black hat. In this type of site, the quality matters but more over people need quality with quantity as the primary factor is to get the ranking as soon as possible. Because it’s an event site it won’t last long for more than a few months or weeks, so all you need is the rankings no matter after some weeks the site is there in the search results or not.

Whereas in the niche or main site link building you have to keep calm and compose as this is your regular long term site and you need authority for it. Yes, the ranking is the major factor here too, but you don’t want to lose the rankings within a month just like event sites. So here you need to be choosy in creating quality backlinks over the quantity.
